When I am not blasting the hell spawn off the surface of Mars in Doom or racing with grannies in Coffin Dodgers, I like to have a little flutter. I am also a seasoned visitor to the unofficial home of gambling Las Vegas. Over the years I have won some and lost some but had a lot of fun doing it. During this time I have unknowingly amassed a number of tips that I have shared with friends. Whilst I won’t bore you with every single tactic for each casino, game type and game brand, I thought it was good to outline the basics first.
As such, I will start with my seven essential tips for beginners. If you follow these then you will be in good stead to play online.
Set a Budget and Stick to it
The most important point when starting out in the world online gaming, is to play to your means. You will lose money gambling, so it’s important to control how much. Whether it is a daily, weekly or monthly budget, I would suggest running it like a business or hobby. If you have a $300 a month to spend on your hobby, then break it down into sessions and stick to the budget. If you have $50 to spend, don’t play $10 slot machines as your game time will be short.
Choose the Right Casino
Every casino will claim to be the best, so it’s worth shopping around and noting down the pro’s and con’s, as well as their welcome bonus and promotions. Look for casinos that are trusted and have strong reputations. Casinos that are regulated by the UK Gambling Commission such as M88.com will have stringent rules to follow in order to be approved.
Take Advantage of the Promotions
Nearly all online casinos have promotions and welcome bonuses, so in the early days you can set up multiple accounts and pretty much gamble for twice as long as normal due to all the matched credit offers. I would recommend setting up a separate Gmail account for signing up as you will get lot’s of emails tempting you back, so it’s good to keep these emails together and manageable.
Play the Right Games and Learn Them
Personally, I love playing the video slots due to the range of licensed games from Marvel characters to Hoff-mania. However, I know that the best odds come from games such as video poker or blackjack. Choose a couple of games to specialise in and revise. You need to know the games odds, strategies and pitfalls in and out. Watch videos, read books and even create a ‘cheat sheet’ with all the points you need to remember. Keep it next to your computer so you can refer to it when needed.
Stick to a Schedule and Take a Break
Managing your time is an important step to being in control. It’s easy to get caught up in all the excitement and find yourself still playing in the small hours of the morning. However, if you want to approach it like a professional then set a schedule (no longer than 2 hours) in which you mind can stay alert and focused. During this time, take regular breaks, drink your fluids and get some fresh air. Being on form is key to playing your best.
Don’t Play Intoxicated
The biggest rookie mistake is to log on when you are ‘drunk’. I lose so much more when my mind is not on the game and I always regret it the following morning. If you want to beat the odds, then you need to treat your game time as ‘the big match’. Ultimately, it’s you versus the casino/machine so being clear headed, awake and ready for some serious strategic thinking.
Control Your Greed
Winning is fantastic feeling and you will love it, however, the dark side of this elation is greed. When you start to win you will be clouded by thoughts of a lucky streak or jealous of other players with a bigger pot. This greed can lead you to bet more than usual which can ultimately lead to losing more. There is no shame in cashing out early if you start to feel your pot is decreasing. Remember to play smart using your head and not let emotions cloud your judgement.
