London-based Upscale Studio has announced that their new co-op shooter Nom Nom Apocalypse will be making its way to PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X|S in Q3-Q4 2025. This chaotic top-down “bullet buffet” transforms the typical zombie apocalypse into a culinary nightmare where mutant food has become humanity’s greatest threat.
When Dinner Fights Back
Nom Nom Apocalypse presents a world overrun by ravenous, grease-dripping food monsters that have turned the city into their hunting ground. Players take on the role of trigger-happy chefs armed with an arsenal of absurd culinary weaponry, battling everything from cheese-spitting cheeseburger beasts to razor-clawed cupcake creatures.
The game’s weapon selection embraces its food theme with gleeful abandon, offering players tools like mustard shotguns, fork crossbows, microwave laser beams, sushi shurikens, and pizza disc launchers. With over 20 culinary weapons available, combat appears to blend practical firepower with deliberately ridiculous food-based ammunition.
Roguelite Replayability with Co-op Chaos
Combining roguelite elements with couch co-op gameplay, Nom Nom Apocalypse offers procedurally generated challenges across five handcrafted levels set in locations like diners, supermarkets, and food factories. The game features six playable chefs, each with unique abilities, and an unlockable perk system that includes trap resistance and melee deflection capabilities.
Local two-player co-op forms the core of the experience, though solo players can tackle the edible hordes alone. With over 30 enemy types ranging from sentient hot dogs to rampaging donuts, each playthrough promises different encounters and strategic challenges.
Critical Reception and Food Puns Galore
Early reviews have highlighted the game’s enthusiastic embrace of food-related humour. Critic Jamie Latour noted that “Nom Nom Apocalypse is a game that truly enjoys its food puns. If there’s an opportunity to make a reference to an aspect of food preparation, the makers of this game take it without a moment of hesitation.”
Adam Chanto praised the cooperative elements, describing it as “perfect for people looking for a challenging co-op experience (with the flexibility to play single player as well).”
Steam reviews suggest a rocky start for the game but hopefully this console release will have ironed out those issues. For players seeking a fresh take on the co-op shooter genre with a healthy serving of absurd humour, Nom Nom Apocalypse appears to offer a uniquely satisfying gaming meal.
