Aesir Interactive and Mindscape have announced that their ambitious open-world horse adventure Windstorm: The Legend of Khiimori will be publicly playable for the first time at Gamescom 2025. The epic action-adventure, set in 13th century Mongolia, will showcase brand new features at booth C-014 in Hall 8.1, including archery, cooking, nomad camping, and exploration of the desert biome with its refreshing oases.

Courier Riders in Ancient Mongolia
Windstorm: The Legend of Khiimori places players in the role of a brave courier rider navigating the open wilds of 13th century Mongolia during the height of the Mongol Empire. As a Yam courier rider, players must chart sprawling landscapes where horses serve as essential companions for survival and mission success.
The first gameplay trailer reveals breathtaking Mongolian vistas that form the backdrop for this horse-centric adventure. Players will need to strategically plan routes through diverse biomes of beautiful yet harsh terrain, mastering wilderness challenges to complete courier missions that build their legacy as one of history’s greatest riders.

Authentic Equine Experience
Central to the experience is the relationship between rider and horse. Players can tame, breed, and train horses, with each breed offering distinct strengths and characteristics. The game promises unparalleled realism in equine behaviour and animation, developed with expert consultation to ensure authentic horse interactions.
Maintaining bonds with these majestic animals is crucial for unlocking their full potential. This relationship-building mechanic suggests a deeper connection than typical mount systems, emphasising care, training, and understanding of individual horse personalities and capabilities.

Nomadic Lifestyle Simulation
Beyond horse care, players will cultivate their nomadic camp, managing resources and items essential for survival in the harsh Mongolian landscape. The inclusion of cooking and camping mechanics suggests a comprehensive survival experience that captures the realities of nomadic life during this historical period.
The strategic element extends to route planning across different biomes, each presenting unique challenges and opportunities. This environmental diversity should provide varied gameplay experiences as players adapt their approach to different terrains and weather conditions.

Strong Community Support
The game recently concluded a successful Kickstarter campaign, raising funds described as “unprecedented scale for the horse game niche” with thousands of worldwide backers. This enthusiastic community support demonstrates significant demand for authentic horse-based gaming experiences.
Windstorm: The Legend of Khiimori is planned for Early Access release on Steam and Epic Games Store in autumn 2025, with full releases planned for PC and consoles including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Aesir Interactive will host an in-house livestream at the end of July on Twitch and YouTube, with the exact date to be announced via social media channels.
