Neon Inferno: Cyberpunk Run-and-Gun

Retroware and NYC-based developer Zenovia Interactive have announced Neon Inferno launching 20th November across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam with simultaneous physical release through Limited Run Games. This high-octane run-and-gun shooter pays homage to classics like Contra and Wild Guns through neon-saturated cyberpunk streets where multi-plane gunfights combine side-scrolling and gallery-shooter mechanics.

Neon Inferno

Dual-Plane Combat Innovation

Neon Inferno blends side-scroller and gallery-shooter genres, placing action simultaneously in foreground and background planes. This dynamic approach essentially combines Contra and Wild Guns gameplay, requiring players to manage threats emerging from multiple spatial dimensions rather than single-plane enemy waves.

The multi-plane system distinguishes Neon Inferno from straightforward run-and-gun titles, creating tactical complexity through depth-based positioning and target prioritisation across layered environments.

Neon Inferno

Deflection-Based Combat Mechanics

The razor-sharp sword serves dual purposes beyond melee attacks. Well-timed slashes deflect enemy bullets, ricocheting projectiles back at aggressors for brutal executions. This “Return to Sender” mechanic rewards precision timing and skillful play with stylish takedowns.

The deflection system transforms defensive manoeuvres into offensive opportunities, encouraging aggressive sword utilisation alongside conventional gunfire. This risk-reward balance creates satisfying moments when successful bullet deflections eliminate multiple enemies through redirected fire.

Neon Inferno

Character Selection and Customisation

Players choose between syndicate assassins Angelo Morano or Mariana Vitti, carving bloody paths through neon-drenched New York to eliminate rivals. Arsenal customisation through weapons and upgrades allows players to dial carnage to maximum intensity whilst adapting loadouts to personal preferences or specific encounter requirements.

The weapon variety and upgrade systems suggest mechanical depth beyond basic shooting, where strategic equipment choices influence combat effectiveness across different boss encounters and stage compositions.

Neon Inferno

Cooperative Multiplayer

Two-player co-op mode doubles firepower for friends tackling New York’s war-torn streets together. The cooperative option accommodates social gaming preferences whilst potentially easing difficulty through combined offensive capabilities and revive mechanics typical of co-op shooters.

Each stage concludes with fierce boss encounters testing reflexes and resource management. These ruthless killing machines demand precision with bullets and sword slashes, creating skill-based challenges appropriate for arcade-style difficulty curves.

Neon Inferno

Retro Aesthetic Presentation

The sci-fi cityscape receives gorgeous 32-bit style pixel art rendering backed by evocative soundtrack. This glorious retro aesthetic appeals to audiences nostalgic for 1990s gaming visuals whilst leveraging modern display capabilities for enhanced clarity and effects.

Difficulty options span easier modes for casual playthroughs to demanding 1-credit-clear arcade mode testing skills and resilience. This accessibility range accommodates varied player abilities without diluting hardcore challenge availability.

Neon Inferno targets run-and-gun enthusiasts seeking stylish cyberpunk action with innovative multi-plane mechanics when it launches next month.
