Pimbolas – Chaotic Foosball

Brazilian developer Nano Knight Studio is looking to shake up the party game genre with Pimbolas, a title that takes the familiar concept of foosball and throws it into the blender alongside power-ups, explosive balls, giant planets, and what appears to be the odd crab for good measure. The result, according to the studio, is a fast-paced arcade experience designed to be picked up instantly but keep players coming back for more.

No two matches in Pimbolas are meant to feel the same, and that variety seems to be central to the whole concept. Players can compete across different arenas using an impressive range of gameplay objects, including square balls, fireballs, ice balls, coconuts, and explosive bombs, all of which are layered on top of a modifier system that constantly shifts how each round plays out. The developers say the intention was to create an environment where unexpected situations are the norm rather than the exception, pushing players to adapt on the fly rather than settle into a fixed strategy.

Whilst Pimbolas does include an Arcade Mode for solo players who fancy taking on CPU opponents, Nano Knight Studio is clear that local multiplayer is where the game is designed to thrive. Up to four players can compete together, and the combination of simple controls and chaotic modifiers is pitched squarely at the kind of couch gaming session that turns into a full evening without anyone noticing. The studio cites Boomerang Fu, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros., Mario Strikers, and Mario Tennis as inspirations, and suggests that fans of games like Overcooked, Gang Beasts, Castle Crashers, and Party Animals will feel at home with what Pimbolas is offering.

The game also launches with a notable collaboration baked in from the start. Players will be able to unlock characters inspired by Shard Squad, a bullet heaven title developed by The Root Studios and published by Nuntius Games, marking the first of what Nano Knight Studio intends to be an ongoing series of crossovers with other indie games and gaming personalities. The studio has confirmed that further collaborations are already in development, with the aim of keeping the roster fresh and the game evolving well beyond launch.
